CO2-based congestion charge 'would be embraced by public'

CO2-based congestion charge 'would be embraced by public'

Date: 19/10/2010

London's congestion charge ought to be changed to a system that is based on cars' CO2 emissions.

That is the view suggested by Faye Sunderland, Editor of TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk, who said this arrangement would be "easily understood and embraced by the public".

She was commenting on the results of a survey conducted by the online portal, which revealed 69 per cent of respondents believe the congestion charge should be changed to a CO2-based system, which would allow the most environmentally-friendly diesel and petrol cars to drive through the capital free of charge.

Transport for London is currently considering Greener Vehicle Discount proposals and a decision is expected soon.

Ms Sunderland commented: "While CO2 emissions don't tell the whole environmental story they are the most recognisable measure of green performance in the motor industry."

Recently, Director of WhatGreenCar.com Dr Ben Lane predicted the popularity of electric cars will rise in 2011 due to the introduction of consumer grants in January.
