Committee launched to improve traffic in Nigeria

Date: 5/12/2011

A committee has been established in Nigeria in a bid to prevent traffic from becoming gridlocked during New Year celebrations in the country.

Six locations have been identified where the volume of vehicles often leads to accidents, breakdowns and "chaotic situations," the Daily Trust reported Minister of State for Works Bashir Yuguda as saying.

He claimed the most important issue to address is traffic flowing through Gwagwalada and work is currently taking place to construct a bridge and widen a road in the area.

The committee has been tasked with the job of controlling and managing individuals using Nigeria's major roads at the end of December.

Mr Yuguda added: "The rest is for us to make sure we control the traffic and behaviour of motorists, because that is a very big problem."

At the end of last month, the East African reported a $743 million (£475 million) project has been established to build a new road linking Addis Ababa, Nairobi and Mombasa, thus improving trade between Kenya and Ethiopia.
