Construction of London's Cycle Superhighway 5 set to begin

Date: 12/6/2013
Work to develop London's fifth Cycle Superhighway is set to begin this month, with the first section between Oval and New Cross expected to be delivered by the autumn. The authorities opted to push ahead with the project after a public consultation found 85 per cent of respondents supported the proposals, and the scheme will also see the introduction of a number of full segregation areas designed to improve cyclists' safety.
Indeed, a raft of junction upgrades and two new 20mph speed limit zones are included in the plans as (TfL) Transport for London pushes on with its attempts to boost cycling in the capital.
Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, explained that the organisation's efforts to support cyclists have had a positive impact in the capital in recent years.
"Since the introduction of Barclays Cycle Superhighways in July 2010, the number of cyclists on the four existing routes has increased by an average of 77 per cent during peak periods," he said.
