Consultation launched into overseas vehicle registration

Consultation launched into overseas vehicle registration

Date: 4/3/2011

The process of registering a car in another European country, or of having the details logged in the UK if it was purchased abroad, can be complicated in many cases, it has been claimed.

In light of this, the European Commission has launched a consultation to discuss how to make the whole process easier for drivers purchasing vehicles while in other member states.

Currently, uncoordinated rules across the continent and the requirement of each nation that vehicles be registered through their own laws and their local authorities makes the whole process problematic, according to the body.

However, European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani - Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship - said purchasing a car in one member state and then moving it to another should not be so complicated.

"Our aim is to save time and money for consumers and businesses, as well as for national registration offices," he added.

Elsewhere, the European Court of Justice recently ruled against the use of gender being taken into account by car insurance and other service providers when calculating the cost of a product.
