Consultation launched on classic cars and bikes MOT exemption

Consultation launched on classic cars and bikes MOT exemption

Date: 3/11/2011

A new consultation is examining whether or not classic cars and motorbikes should be exempted from MOT tests in future.

Mike Penning, roads minister, announced the moves and stated that the current requirements for these vehicles to undergo an MOT is above and beyond the standard set out in European legislation.

The proposal would exempt those vehicles manufactured before 1960 from these requirements, citing the fact that owners typically keep these cars and bikes in good condition and have far lower accident and MOT failure rates as a result.

Mr Penning said: "Owners of classic cars and motorbikes are enthusiasts who maintain their vehicles well - they don't need to be told to look after them, they're out there every weekend checking the condition of the engine, tyres and bodywork."

Last month, new transport secretary Justine Greening backed plans to raise the UK's motorway speed limit to 80mph due to improvements in road management, vehicle safety and vehicle technology.ADNFCR-2726-ID-800785660-ADNFCR
