Consultation launched on South Kensington Station

Date: 2/9/2011
Building an as-yet-unspecified development could provide the funding necessary to improve South Kensington Station. This is the main proposal that will be under discussion at a consultation launched last week by London Underground and set to end on October 7th.
Transport for London (TfL) reports that these improvements could include the addition of a new entrance on Thurloe Street, which would feature a lift down to an enlarged ticket hall.
It is believed this could ease some of the problems of congestion that have resulted from the flight of stairs from the District and Circle Line platforms being relatively narrow.
Furthermore, it would provide a point of step-free access to passengers who may have difficulty with mobility.
As elements of the station and the buildings around it are listed, TfL has claimed that care will be taken to ensure that any development enhances the neighbourhood, with conservation a key issue.
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has helped to contribute to these proposals.
The recently opened extension of the Docklands Light Railway is fully accessible, meaning that there are alternatives to steps for those who require these options.
