Consumer incentives 'will boost sustainable transport efforts'

Date: 30/6/2010
Very low-carbon cars will need to come with incentives for consumers to popularise them, according to a motoring association. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) welcomed the moves outlined in a recent report by the Committee on Climate Change, which included a call for consumer incentives for green driving.
Drivers are moving towards greater fuel efficiency, according to the report, which was the second of its kind to be produced.
Chief Executive of the SMMT Paul Everitt said the government needs a long-term strategy on taxation.
He also noted significant strides in reducing CO2 emissions have been made within the motoring sector.
One car manufacturer that is working on sustainability issues is Nissan, which recently secured a £20 million government grant in order to produce electric cars on a mass scale.
Jonathan Visscher, Media Manager for the SMMT, suggested the move would incentivise low-carbon technology all over the UK.
