Could electric cars face uncertain future?

Date: 8/4/2011
Electric cars could face an uncertain future in the aftermath of the nuclear crisis in Japan, according to one reporter. In an article for the BBC, Puneet Pal Singh highlights that while the motor industry is playing an important role in reducing emissions, this could now be under threat.
Explaining that nuclear energy is needed to charge the batteries for electric vehicles, he adds that following the crisis some countries have concerns about using this kind of power.
And charging these batteries using fossil fuels would mean the implementation of these vehicles would do nothing to reduce emissions, he states.
However, Mr Singh notes that rising fuel prices may have a positive effect in encouraging governments to turn to alternative power sources.
"Analysts say that given these factors the push for electric cars may gain even more momentum", he comments.
The Retail Motor Industry Federation recently noted that interest in green vehicles is growing.
