Council calls for Crossrail to be extended to Reading

Date: 6/6/2013
Reaching Council has called on the Secretary of State for Transport to include Reading station on the new Crossrail link when it becomes operational. After £895 million was spent on revamping the town's station, the local authorities believe the extension of the Crossrail line would help to tackle overcrowding in the wider area - as well as boost Reading's position as a major employment centre.
Indeed, in a letter to Patrick McLoughlin, Councillor Tony Page argued that extending the service beyond Maidenhead would make best use of the redeveloped station.
"Reading Borough Council sees every reason to extend Crossrail and its services to Reading and I would urge you to make an early announcement to this effect," the letter read.
The Councillor also called for clarification on the future of routes between Reading and Heathrow, as well as a confirmation of the dates on which the electrification of certain lines is expected to be completed.
