Council leader outlines 10 year transport vision for Birmingham

Date: 24/5/2013
Birmingham Councillor Sir Albert Bore has outlined his ambition for the city's transport system to be among the best in Europe within the next ten years.Speaking to the Birmingham Post, Sir Albert explained that a draft plan will be published in the autumn before the opening of a full consultation designed to shape the future of the area's transport infrastructure.
According to the Councillor, a drastic rethink on how best to integrate tram and bus routes with railway stations and pedestrian zones is required if the city's residents are to see a significant improvement in their travel options in the coming years.
"In Britain the way in which we have planned transport infrastructure, particularly in cities, has got us nowhere," he claimed.
"In Birmingham it’s not even up to the mark you want in Manchester where you’ve got a Metro system."
While Sir Albert's plans are founded on a long-term vision, he revealed that immediate plans include making travel cheaper for young jobseekers.
