Council wins road safety management award

Date: 5/1/2011
Calderdale Council has become the only UK local authority to be ranked in the government's Driving for Better Business awards.According to the Halifax Evening Courier, Tesco, Balfour Beaty and Michelin also made the top ten, while seven of the entrants including the council also received formal recognition of the high level of management they have demonstrated in the field of occupational road risk.
As a result, the local authority will be helping businesses in both the public and private sector by highlighting the advantages of road safety training and supervision.
Barry Collins, Economy and Environment Spokesman, said that as a result of the council's work, insurance premiums had been lowered and public safety improved.
Meanwhile, Road Safety Projects Manager David Short noted that the prize was indicative of the care the local authority took of people making use of its transport.
Altogether, council drivers are responsible for 214 vehicles.
Elsewhere, Northamptonshire has been congratulated after achieving the lowest number of fatalities on its roads during 2010 since records began.
