Crossrail 2 project is vital, says Mayor

Date: 11/6/2013
Ensuring the Crossrail 2 initiative is delivered as quickly as possible is vital to the future of London's transport network, Mayor Boris Johnson has said.In a paper which outlines his ambitions for the capital between now and 2020, the Mayor explained that he wants work to begin on the project in 2019 in order for the city to benefit from the scheme and realise its potential to stimulate the city's economy.
"The question about Crossrail 2 is not whether it should happen, but how quickly we can get it moving," Mr Johnson wrote.
"It would galvanise economic activity in that quadrant of London, while bringing simultaneous and symmetrical improvements to Hackney and other parts of north-east London."
Crossrail 2 involves linking the north-east of the capital with the south-west, and the Mayor also highlighted a number of other potential transport improvements that he wants to make in the capital.
These include extending the bike hire scheme, continuing efforts to upgrade the Tube network and increasing the number of Routemaster buses on the roads.
