Crossrail lorry drivers 'to receive cyclist awareness training'

Date: 24/2/2010
Thousands of lorry and van drivers are to receive cyclist awareness training during Crossrail's seven-year construction project in London. The company has introduced a safety programme for every lorry driver who regularly works on the construction of Crossrail to give them the skills needed to navigate London's roads.
Around 3,500 drivers are expected to be given the training on how to drive carefully near cyclists, which has been developed with input from cycling and road safety campaign groups. It is also being supported by the freight industry.
Crossrail chief executive Rob Holden told Bike For All: "The safety of all road users, including cyclists, is of paramount importance to us which is why frequent lorry drivers working for Crossrail must complete this induction training.
"By introducing the training well in advance of the main construction works starting, we are demonstrating our commitment to ensuring that all of Crossrail's drivers are equipped with the skills and expertise to navigate London's busy roads safely."
The training is focused on Crossrail lorry routes in and out of the capital, and some of the busiest routes which include roundabouts and junctions are being used as examples of places where drivers need to use particular caution.
More than 70 lorry drivers have completed the training to date.
