Cumbria receives funding to repair flooded roads

Date: 9/8/2013
The devastating floods that hit Cumbria in 2009 caused severe damage to many of the county's roads and transport facilities. Now the government has pledged a further £7.2 million to enable infrastructure repairs to take place in the area, particularly highway slopes, improving drainage and repairs to culverts, footways and bridges.
On announcing the provision of the funds, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said that reliable highways and local roads are vital to the communities in the area, providing access to friends, relatives, work, shopping and many other services.
He added: "The flooding that Cumbria encountered in 2009 devastated many roads and I know how important it is for the people in the area for the repairs to happen. That is why this government has been committed to working with Cumbria County Council to ensure this happens. I am pleased to announce further funding to support Cumbria County Council's vital work."
The £7.2 million is the last funding the area will receive to repair flood damage and follows on from the £18 million already spent to help Cumbria repair its local transport infrastructure.
