Cumbria to receive new road bridge

Date: 9/2/2010
Transportation around Cumbria is to be made easier with the construction of a new road bridge over the River Derwent.Speaking in Workington yesterday (February 8th), transport minister Sadiq Khan revealed that the government is to spend £4.6 million on the bridge.
"The building of this bridge will be a vital step in reuniting the town and will make life easier for local residents and businesses who are still recovering from the devastation caused by last year's flooding," he said.
Expected to be open by May, the new bridge is to replace those damaged and destroyed by floods in November 2009.
Material, design and construction will all be paid for out of the government funding.
Cumbria has also benefitted from a temporary footbridge called the Barker Crossing and additional rail services, following the devastation caused by last year's floods.
Water levels reached 2.5 metres in Cockermouth, Cumbria, during the floods.
