Date: 13/8/2010
The success of London's cycle hire scheme demonstrates the nation's enthusiasm for cycling, according to Mayor Boris Johnson.More than 100,000 journeys have now been made on the Barclays bikes since the project was launched on July 30th.
And with some 44,000 members signed up to the initiative, Mr Johnson declared it to be one of the capital's success stories.
"Despite the soggy weather, tens of thousands of Londoners have been choosing Cycle Hire to get about - giving an emphatic thumbs up to the scheme," he said.
Since the initiative began, engineers have been installing additional docking stations across London, taking the number up to 331 from the initial 315.
Transport for London aims for there to be 6,000 bikes and 400 docking points when Barclays Cycle Hire is complete.
Over 14,250 journeys were made during the programme's first weekend at the beginning of this month, with the most popular locations including Soho and Covent Garden.
