Cycle lane at London station to be widened

Date: 19/5/2011
London cyclists' concerns have been acted on, with a new proposal to go ahead to widen one of their designated lanes.Transport for London (TfL) reveals that it has reconsidered plans on behalf of Network Rail that will see pedestrian facilities outside Blackfriars Station in the capital being enhanced, with work set to begin in June 2011.
Bicycle users had voiced their worries over proposals to alter the junction and the plans have now been redrafted in what is hoped to provide the best outcome for all road users.
The junction needs to undergo an alteration as it is believed that more pedestrians will be using it once the station re-opens following the completion of upgrades by Network Rail.
Included in the new plans will be the two-metre widening of the northbound cycle lane near the facility, while the southbound route will be retained.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson says: "The changes they have made support my desire to improve the facilities for cyclists right across the capital."
Earlier in the week, TfL invited bidding from community groups in London for a grant of £5,000, which is available through the Community Cycling Fund for London scheme.
