Cycle lanes 'must be consistent'

Cycle lanes 'must be consistent'

Date: 18/5/2012

Cycle lanes in the UK need to be made more consistent, it has been claimed.

Chief Executive of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety Robert Gifford explained changes need to be made to ensure these lanes actually benefit cyclists.

"There are places around the country where a cycle lane has been put in which then comes to a complete halt and you're thrown out into three lanes of traffic," Mr Gifford continued.

He called for greater enforcement of the law to ensure car drivers give cyclists more consideration, as it is often these road users who cause the most harm to people on bikes.

While many drive too fast, others do not look in their windows and pull out in front of cyclists, nearly knocking them over, the expert added.

Many people may agree with these comments, as research conducted by road safety charity Brake and solicitors Bolt Burdon Kemp found 66 per cent of commuters think British roads are unsuitable for cycling.
