Money made available by the (DfT) Department for Transport via the Cycle Safety Fund has been awarded to 78 different schemes throughout England, Transport Minister Norman Baker has revealed. While the total value of the projects is estimated at some £40 million, the DfT will contribute approximately £20 million as it looks to enhance roads to boost cyclists' safety.
All initiatives are due to be completed within the next 12 months, and include everything from simplifying road layouts and altering junctions to changing crossings.
The Minister explained that all applications for funding under the Cycle Safety Fund has been properly assessed, with those that will deliver the highest range of benefits being given the green light.
"To help ensure that the best schemes are funded, the department has been supported by a panel of experts coordinated by the transport charity Sustrans, including representatives of CTC, British Cycling, Cycle Nation, Campaign to Protect Rural England and Transport for London," he said.
