Cycling to school 'gives kids confidence'

Date: 20/3/2012

Cycling to school gives children more confidence when it comes to dealing with traffic, it has been claimed.

A spokesman for CTC, the national cyclists' organisation, explained 20 per cent of traffic on the UK's roads in the morning is caused by the school run, so people should find alternative ways of getting their kids to lessons.

Bikes are the ideal choice, as not only are they environmentally-friendly, but they teach youngsters about safety and staying alert when out and about.

This week (March 19th to 23rd) is Bike to School Week and the representative explained CTC runs Bikeability cycle training sessions in schools and youth clubs to teach children about cycling with care.

"CTC thinks it is much more important to learn the skills to ride safely and with confidence than it is to wear a helmet," the spokesman added, noting there is evidence to suggest kids who wear helmets actually take more risks when cycling.
