Cycling 'without consideration for others is dangerous'

Cycling 'without consideration for others is dangerous'

Date: 31/8/2010

Riding a bike can be a dangerous activity if people are not aware of other road users, according to one individual.

Police Community Support Officer Emma Barlow told The News educating people who ride dangerously could reduce the number of future incidents.

"Cycling without consideration for pedestrians and other road users is a very dangerous activity and without the correct safety gear it can lead to accidents," she said.

Ms Barlow's comments come after police officers in Portsmouth stopped over 200 cyclists to remind them of the significance of being visible on the roads and wearing a helmet.

Sergeant Darren Ord of the Roads Policing Unit stated the force wants to educate cyclists about the importance of safety in order to reduce the number of minor-injury accidents involving those on bikes.

Last month, Neil Greig of the Institute of Advanced Motorists warned cyclists not to use their bikes after drinking alcohol.
