Cyclists fear 'increased danger' from West End transport overhaul

Date: 26/4/2013
Cyclists in London have expressed fears that an £8.3 million scheme to overhaul key roads in the West End will pose a further threat to their safety.Under existing plans, Regent Street and Haymarket will be narrowed in order to create wider pavements for pedestrians - but cyclists are concerned that the shrinking of busy roads will force them even closer to traffic.
Danny Williams, writer for the Cyclists in the City blog, explained: "The scheme provides lovely wide pavements but actually makes the conditions for cycling even worse than they are now and neglects to improve the hopelessly inadequate junction design."
However, James Cooksey, Head of the Crown Estate's St James's Portfolio that will work on the project, claimed that the initiative will result in essential improvements in the area.
"These proposals will better manage congestion, reduce pollution, create new road surfaces and improve traffic-easing measures," he said.
