Cyclists get new perspective in safety campaign

Date: 18/10/2010

Cyclists have been encouraged to adopt the perspective of lorry drivers in an innovative safety scheme in Lambeth.

YourLocalGuardian.co.uk reports police organised an event earlier this month at Streatham Common where cyclists and other residents had the opportunity to sit in the cab of a lorry in order to understand how difficult in can be for drivers to see bikes in their mirrors.

The initiative was arranged following a number of road collisions involving bikes in the area, with four taking place in one morning in Clapham.

A spokesman for Lambeth Police said the division is "highlighting the need for safety awareness, especially as the hours of daylight decrease".

He advised cyclists to wear a protective helmet and reflective clothing, as well as make sure their bikes are fitted with front and rear lights.

Hector Nicolson, Road Safety Officer at Central Scotland Police, also urged cyclists to switch on their lights recently, telling the Stirling Observer people on bikes are vulnerable on the roads.
