Cyclist's warned not to drink and ride

Cyclist's warned not to drink and ride

Date: 28/7/2010

Cyclist's who consume alcohol at summer parties or barbecues are being advised to leave their bikes behind.

Neil Greig from the Institute of Advanced Motorists said the majority of cycle crashes do not get reported and those who fall off visit the hospital, rather than let the police know about the incident.

"It is often the case that people who have had a couple of extra drinks will be cycling home in the dark, increasing the danger involved," he added.

Mr Greig noted cyclists could put the safety of other road users at risk, as motorists may swerve to avoid someone riding a bike.

Cycling while under the influence of alcohol or drugs can also have a financial impact on individuals, as those incapable of having proper control of their two wheels in a public place can be fined up to £1,000.

Last week, Transport for London revealed more than 1,700 individuals have signed up to use the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme.

Residents in the capital will be able to rent bikes from various locations around the city.
