Dartford Crossing free-flow payment system to go ahead

Date: 16/7/2013
The Dartford-Thurrock River Crossing’s proposed free-flow payment system is set to be introduced from next year, Roads Minister Stephen Hammond announced. Two consultations were carried out and the overall response was one of support from the general public.
The technology will mean that motorists will not have to stop at the Crossing’s barriers and instead pay using one of many methods, including via telephone, text message, online and through retail outlets.
This will provide utmost flexibility for drivers travelling over or under the River Thames while also ensuring (rep) transport keeps a steady flow, reducing congestion.
"The Dartford Crossing is vital to the local and national economy and introducing free-flow technology will cut congestion and improve journeys for the thousands of motorists and businesses who use the Crossing every day," said Mr Hammond.
It is suggested that motorists pay the levy before using the Crossing, but they will have up until midnight the following day. Non-payment will cost £70, reduced to £35 if settled within 14 days. After 28 days the penalty increases to £105.
