Dazzling appearance 'could hide real history'

Date: 19/1/2011
A dazzling appearance could conceal a hidden history, people considering buying a second-hand vehicle have been warned. The HPI claims that while it is easy to be taken in by a car that boasts the latest must-have gadgets or a shiny exterior, this could distract consumers from what is really important - such as the road safety of the vehicle.
What is most important, the firm claims, is for buyers to ensure they do not fall victim to used car fraud by taking the necessary steps to find out if the vehicle has been stolen, clocked, cloned or if there is outstanding finance attached to it.
Nicola Johnson, Consumer Services Manager for HPI, said: "It is important for buyers to remain neutral and inspect a vehicle carefully, as a hidden history can be lurking just beneath the surface."
HPI also recently advised people buying a used car from a private buyer in order to avoid paying VAT to be vigilant and find out about the vehicle's history.
