Derbyshire County Council issues £1.5m community transport grant

Date: 12/3/2013
Community transport schemes in Derbyshire are to benefit from a £1.5 million grant issued by the County Council, the Derbyshire Times reports.A total of seven different programmes aimed at supporting residents will split the funding - including Rural Action Derbyshire, which runs a Wheels to Work Scheme for local people.
"Community transport and the voluntary car schemes do an excellent job in helping people who have difficulty using public transport keep their independence and get around to places like the shops or doctors' surgeries," said Councillor Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council's Highways Chief.
All of the County's community transport initiatives are run by charitable organisations, relying on a mix of volunteer and paid drivers who receive training to ensure they're capable of meeting the various needs of the population.
With everything from people carriers to 32-seat buses, the local network plays a vital role in supporting residents with restricted access to transport options.
