Details of EVDP outlined

Date: 20/1/2011
Thousands of new charge points for electric vehicles could be installed across London as part of Boris Johnson's plans for a greener city. The Mayor of London first outlined his Electric Vehicle Delivery Plan (EVDP) in 2009 and now Transport for London is asking to be authorised under the Greater London Authority Act to ensure all aspects of the scheme can be delivered in accordance with his commitment.
In addition to an aim to have 1,000 electric vehicles within the Greater London Authority's fleet by 2015, it is hoped that 25,000 electric vehicle charge points will have been installed by the same year.
Of these, 500 will be publically accessible and "on-street," 2,000 will be "off-street" in facilities such as car parks and 22,500 will not be publically-accessible, in spots including private business car parks and depots.
Public charge points will be supported by Source London, a pan-London scheme that will allow electric vehicle drivers to benefit from a single point of access to the charging infrastructure, brought about through networking the various points.
This means motorists will be able to access it, irrespective of where they are in the city.
Dr Ben Lane from nextgreencar.com recently said that the UK will "certainly" be seeing more electric and hybrid vehicles on its roads in the next few years.
