DFID produces transport social impact appraisals report

Date: 8/8/2013
The (DFID) Department for International Development has produced a new report to provide resources for its advisors and external partners working on transport programmes and research around the world. It summarises evidence around the impact of transport on social welfare, the distributional impacts of transport on vulnerable groups, such as low-income groups, children, people with disabilities and the elderly.
The report also details the social risks associated with transport programmes, such as disease transmission, road safety and resettlement, the role of public works programmes in the transport sector and the social development checklist.
DFID's resource highlighted that low and middle-income countries make up 92 per cent of road fatalities around the world, even though this demographic owns just 53 per cent of the motor vehicles in the world.
A further two sections of the report address the issues of programme operation and design, providing a framework for assessing the relevance of labour-intensive intervention strategies, as well as a checklist to ensure social development concerns are integrated into the design of research and programmes around the world.
