DfT announces local authority funding for green transport

Date: 21/1/2011
UK local authorities are to receive an "unprecedented" £560 million funding increase to be put towards sustainable and public transport developments.According to the Department for Transport (DfT), the aim of the plans is to stimulate economic growth, lower carbon emissions and encourage people to use public transport or walk or cycle more.
Additional proposals set out in the Local Sustainable Transport Fund white paper include cutting red tape while also reducing emissions and giving people more power when it comes to initiating innovative transport schemes in their home towns.
Norman Baker, Regional and Local Transport Minister, said: "Investment in local sustainable transport can deliver quick gains with both objectives, which is why, even in these difficult financial times, we are providing an unprecedented £560 million to take this agenda forward."
He added that investing money wisely in local sustainable transport projects was a "win-win" decision.
