DfT launches £25m waste-to-fuel scheme

Date: 5/8/2013
The (DfT) Department for Transport has launched a new £25 million scheme aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of waste-to-fuel initiatives in the UK.Transport Minister Norman Baker revealed the fund will be used over the next three years to enable the construction of demonstration-scale waste-to-fuel and other advanced biofuel plants in the UK.
Mr Baker said: "I am delighted that we are able to support these innovative technologies and believe that they will bring significant benefits to the UK."
He went on to note that there is an opportunity for the UK to take a "technological lead, driving growth, creating highly-skilled jobs and seeing energy, security and environmental benefits" through the investment in the industry.
Biofuels can be made from forestry residues, municipal waste and other materials through complex processing techniques, with the fuel used in road transport and aviation.
Edward Davey, Energy and Climate Secretary, backed the plans and explained that biofuels can make a "sustainable contribution" to the UK's 2020 renewable energy targets.
