DfT launches scheme to remove 'pointless' signs

Date: 18/3/2013
A new scheme designed to encourage local authorities to remove unnecessary traffic signs has been launched by the (DfT) Department for Transport today (March 18th).Under the initiative, town halls will be rewarded for making attempts to cut out signs which are irrelevant or no longer serving a purpose, with a ceremony set to take place on June 13th at the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation Awards.
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: "Pointless signs blot our landscape, confuse motorists and are expensive to maintain.
"This new award is about recognising and showcasing the good work being done by local authorities across the country, and I urge councils who are taking action to tackle this problem to put themselves forward."
Councils looking to achieve recognition for their efforts can do so by demonstrating savings in sign maintenance costs and conducting audits to establish if signs need replacing or removing, while improving the environment by providing less sign clutter will also be commended.
