DfT makes theory test change

DfT makes theory test change

Date: 25/1/2012

The Department for Transport (DfT) has altered the driving theory test in a bid to ensure learners gain a greater knowledge of using the roads correctly.

From January 23rd, pre-published questions are no longer being used in the test in order to prevent candidates from reciting the answers from memory while they are sitting the test.

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said the move will encourage those learning to drive to "prepare by learning each topic area thoroughly rather than just memorising the questions and answers."

"The intention is to improve candidates' knowledge and understanding of driving theory," he added.

General Manager at the Driving Instructors Association Steve Garrod welcomed the decision, noting knowledge of the Highway Code has been falling since the launch of the theory test in 1996.

Candidates will still be able to test themselves using revision questions available in theory test books, which now also contain case studies that learners can apply their knowledge too.
