DfT releases improvement plans for Britain's roads

Date: 25/5/2012

Justine Greening has released some of the details of proposed improvements to the British roads network, which are designed to trigger a raft of benefits for motorists.

The Transport Secretary is overseeing an overhaul of highways after Alan Cook published an independent review of the nation's facilities for drivers in November last year.

Ms Greening said she has taken many of his recommendations on board, noting: "This paves the way for a more efficient, business like and commercially focussed operator, which crucially does much more to listen and respond to the needs of road users".

A 20-year plan has been drawn up that will set the Highways Agency new targets in a variety of roads-related areas.  The Transport Secretary admitted motorways and A roads are essentially the "backbone of Britain".

The government has been busy introducing new pieces of legislation for road users in recent times, including Road Minister Mike Penning's announcement that classic car owners will no longer have to put their vehicles through MOTs.
