DfT releases lorry parking report

Date: 10/11/2011
A study has been conducted by the Department for Transport (DfT) into the usage levels of lorry parking facilities and their capacity. It is hoped this will make it easier for lorry drivers to find safe places to stop and park their vehicle.
Locations where supply is not enough to meet demand are identified in order to paint a better picture for councils, hauliers and private sector investors into how often facilities accessible from the strategic road network are actually used.
Roads Minister Mike Penning said: "This will improve safety for drivers and reduce disruption for local residents."
He added the report will enable those operating in the sector to "plug gaps in the market, helping to boost growth in the sector."
The DfT is currently conducting a ten-year trial into whether lorries should be able to tow trailers that are two metres longer than the standard length, although the 44-tonne weight limit will remain the same.
