Drivers 'can save cash' with more efficient motoring

Drivers 'can save cash' with more efficient motoring

Motorists are too busy to realise they could save money with simple measures, according to one expert.

Media manager for Shell UK David Wood said careful driving can save individuals hundreds of pounds.

"Just inflate the tyres properly, don't drive with the windows down and get rid of any unnecessary clutter weighing down the car," Mr Wood remarked.

He added driving a few miles per hour slower than normal and changing up to a higher gear more quickly are other ways cash can be saved.

Mr Wood also noted people should make full use of fuel-saving facilities, which are often included in new cars, as cruise control can make a difference to the number of visits needed to the petrol pump.

Shell conducted a six-week study with 11 families on driving behaviour and journey planning, which revealed the participants reduced their mileage by an average of 24 per cent.

Of those involved, four managed a 50 per cent reduction during the six-week initiative.
