Drivers 'could be rewarded for obeying speed limit'

Date: 4/1/2011
Sticking to the speed limit could lead to a financial reward for drivers under plans proposed by Labour, it has been reported.According to the Telegraph, Maria Eagle, the new Shadow Transport Secretary, is preparing a significant overhaul of the party's current motoring strategy.
Among her plans is the proposal to use average speed cameras to promote road safety through offering drivers incentives to ensure they stick to the limit.
"I have seen lately this idea actually if you were to use the information you get from them to have a lottery, have a draw of those who drive under the speed limit," she explained.
Ms Eagle added that rewarding good behaviour may be better psychology than attempting to punish bad practice.
In addition to the lottery idea is a proposal to offer drivers who always stick to the speed limit money off when they renew their tax disc, along with the possibility of removing points from driving licenses.
At the close of 2010, the Department for Transport announced its plans to make the information collected by speed cameras more transparent, with local authorities and the police set to be requested to publish this data for the public.
