Drivers encouraged to fit winter weather tyres

Date: 2/11/2010

Motorists have been urged to fit winter weather tyres to their cars in order to improve road safety over the coming months.

A new survey conducted by TyreSafe found half of UK drivers feel less secure on the roads during winter, with the biggest worry being they are more likely to have an accident on slippery surfaces.

Stuart Jackson, Chairman of the organisation, stated the use of winter weather tyres could allay these fears, as they "offer considerable safety improvements".

The tyres not only result in better performance in snow and ice, but also in a range of conditions over many months of the year, most notably when temperatures fall below seven degrees C, he explained.

"I would encourage all drivers to seriously consider fitting winter weather tyres to ensure they remain safe," Mr Jackson continued.

TyreSafe recently urged Britons to check the tread depth of their tyres, after emergency service workers shared their experiences of the tragic accidents driving with worn wheels can cause.
