Drivers in London 'will be more aware' of cyclists

Date: 29/7/2010
Motorists will be more aware of cyclists thanks to the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme. That is the view of Development Manager Duncan Pickering of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), who said many drivers are not used to looking for cyclists.
And he stated the introduction of accessible bikes will help to encourage more cyclists onto the capital's roads.
"The IAM predicts that, with the critical mass of cyclists going up, drivers will be more aware and be looking out for people on bikes around town," he added.
Mr Pickering noted the initiative will benefit the health of Londoners who rent the bikes, as well as bring environmental and economic rewards.
Earlier this week, Neil Greig from the IAM advised cyclists not to drink alcohol when they plan to ride their bikes.
He explained those who drink and ride could be putting other road users at risk, as drivers may swerve to avoid a cyclist.
