Drivers 'must take responsibility over eyesight'

Drivers 'must take responsibility over eyesight'

Date: 30/3/2012

If motorists want to remain safe on the roads, they must ensure they have good eyesight.

This is according to Martin Howard, a spokesman for road safety charity Brake, who said having clear vision is one of the "most basic requirements of safe driving".

He suggested it is the responsibility of the individual to ensure they are fit to drive and will not harm themselves or others on the roads.

Therefore, the organisation believes motorists should have their eyes tested every two years.

"Drivers who fail to take this step are taking enormous risks with their own lives, along with the lives of other road users and pedestrians," Mr Howard stated.

He added any eyesight changes or deterioration should be reported to the DVLA as soon as possible.

It seems the expert is not the only person who considers eye tests to be important for safe driving, as a study conducted by RIAS found 36 per cent of road users think they should be examined every year.
