Drivers 'need to take more notice' of traffic light signals

Drivers 'need to take more notice' of traffic light signals

Date: 27/5/2010

Motorists are risking their safety because they do not know the correct traffic light sequence, according to new research.

Autoquake revealed that 39 per cent of drivers thought an amber light was about to change to green.

There were huge differences between the answers given in different regions and it was the East Midlands that come out top with 64 per cent choosing the correct answer of red followed by 61 per cent in East Anglia.

Northern Ireland did well too, with 58 per cent choosing the right option, but only 40 per cent of Welsh drivers knew it was red.

Chief Executive Officer Dermot Halpin remarked: "It's amazing that so many drivers think an amber signal is about to change to green when in fact it will change to red."

According to the Highway Code, vehicles should only pull away from traffic lights when they are green, not amber.
