Drivers 'should be cautious in wet conditions'

Drivers 'should be cautious in wet conditions'

Date: 10/10/2011

Heavy rain poses hazardous conditions for drivers, so it is important they take care while behind the wheel.

According to Peter Rodger, Chief Examiner at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, people should ensure they keep to a slower speed during heavy downpours as their stopping distance will be double that of on a dry surface.

In addition, keeping a gap between them and the vehicle in front will help motorists to avoid excess spray on their windscreen, which makes seeing difficult.

Mr Rodger also advises those who have cruise control not to use the function in wet conditions, as it could hinder them should their car start to aquaplane - which occurs when water builds up between the road and the tyres and reduces traction.

This can mean that the vehicle is unable to respond in the correct way to its controls - such as braking, steering and acceleration.

"Be cautious, especially after prolonged dry spells - rain on a dry road is dangerously slippery," Mr Rodger says, adding that motorists should also pay attention to people using the pavement as it is an offence to splash pedestrians.

According to the Met Office, the week ahead (until Friday 14th October) will see rain or showers across most parts of the UK.
