Drivers 'should be prepared for sun glare dangers'

Date: 27/10/2010

Drivers in the UK have been warned to beware of the dangers glare from the sun can pose.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) cites government figures that suggest sun glare was the cause of 2,684 crashes where an injury occurred in 2009 alone.

Neil Greig, IAM Director of Policy and Research, stated drivers will have the added issue of contending with the dazzle of low sun in both the morning and evening from October 31st onwards, when the GMT goes back one hour.

In order to prevent hazards occurring, he suggested: "Keep your windscreen clean, both inside and out. On demist, your heater blows traffic fumes, suspended oil and smoke onto the inside of the screen."

Meanwhile, officials from The Highways Agency and The Deer Initiative recently advised motorists to be on alert for deer on the roads as autumn approaches, particularly at dawn and dusk.
