Drivers 'still ignorant of tyre safety'

Drivers 'still ignorant of tyre safety'

Date: 20/12/2011

Many drivers are still unaware of the importance of their tyres when it comes to road safety, it has been claimed.

TyreSafe Chairman Stuart Jackson discussed the issue as the organisation celebrated its fifth anniversary.

It was established in 2006 and since then, its list of members has grown from the founding 12 to 35, including manufacturers, equipment suppliers and other safety bodies.

"There are still high levels of ignorance and neglect about many tyre safety issues, so it's vitally important that we ramp up our activities even further during the next five years," Mr Jackson stated.

Although TyreSafe originally focused on educating car drivers about the importance of ensuring their wheels are in good condition, its campaigns have now been extended to include motorcyclists, truck drivers and caravanners.

Some of its initiatives include the launch of a tyre pressure app for the iPhone and the release of online safety films.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists recently highlighted the benefits of fitting winter tyres during the colder months, as they are better equipped to deal with adverse weather conditions.
