Drivers urged to Bag it, Bin it! to reduce roadside litter

Date: 16/2/2012
Motorists are being encouraged to keep a plastic bag in their car to help reduce the amount of litter left on Britain's roadsides. The Highways Agency explained it removes nearly 250,000 sacks of rubbish from motorways and A roads every year.
It wants people to ensure they keep a plastic bag with them so they can easily bag up any litter while driving and dispose of it properly.
Since launching the Bag it, Bin it! message last summer, the organisation is extending the campaign ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games, which will take place from July 27th until August 12th.
Roads Minister Mike Penning said: "The money and staff resources spent removing nearly a quarter of a million sacks of litter from England's motorways could be far better spent elsewhere."
He added litter is an "unsightly and unnecessary burden" that can be avoided with a little effort from drivers.
