Drivers urged to check tyres before winter

Date: 15/10/2010

Drivers need to ensure their tyres are in good condition now, before winter frosts set in, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (Iam) has claimed.

The organisation urged road users not to wait until surface water, ice and snow make driving more dangerous, while extra care is needed during autumn too, as sudden heavy showers can significantly affect tyre performance.

Peter Rodger, Chief Examiner at the Iam, advised car owners to check their tyres for cuts and bumps, as well as uneven wear.

People should also measure the pressure of their wheels, as "under-inflation causes excessive tyre wear", he explained.

"Keeping your tyres maintained is an important part of car care, not only for safety but also for fuel economy, [because] under-inflated tyres will increase fuel consumption," Mr Rodger added.

Last month, Chairman of TyreSafe Stuart Jackson encouraged Britons to check the tread depth of their tyres once a month to ensure they are kept legal and safe on the roads.
