Drivers urged to take care following forecast of high winds

Date: 11/11/2010
Road users have been urged to take extra care while travelling and to check the weather forecast before they leave, following a prediction of high winds for today (November 11th) and over the weekend. The Highways Agency warned those in the north-west, south-west and south-east will be particularly affected, with an amber alert having been issued for high-sided vehicles in the north-west.
It advised people to plan their journeys before setting off, as well as checking the road conditions.
Furthermore, the organisation reminded drivers rain and spray can reduce visibility and they should move slowly through any standing water and test their brakes afterwards before continuing on their way.
Those operating high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes were highlighted as being most at risk.
Earlier this month, a survey conducted by TyreSafe revealed half of UK drivers feel less secure on the roads during winter and their biggest worry is they believe they are more likely to have an accident on slippery surfaces.
