Drivers urged to take extra care in wintry conditions

Date: 29/11/2010
Motorists should take steps to make sure they are not caught out by wintry conditions, the Driving Instructors' Association (DIA) has claimed. The organisation said rather than worrying about what to do in the event of a skid, people should put more thought into preventing such occurrences in the first place.
It advised people to drive in a higher gear than normal in order to reduce the risk of wheels slipping, while individuals should stay well back from other vehicles, as snow and ice can fly off at high speeds, which is "potentially lethal".
Furthermore, it is important to keep a good distance between cars because it can take ten times longer to stop in freezing weather, the DIA continued.
It advised motorists to plan to slow or stop in plenty of time, allowing the car to halt under its own steam and ensuring any gear changes are smooth.
Insurance provider More Than also suggested checking tyre, battery and wiper blade conditions before setting off in icy conditions.
