Driving instructors urged to promote road safety

Date: 6/10/2010

Driving instructors have been urged to get involved with Road Safety Week and help raise awareness of the dangers of speeding.

Road safety charity Brake has encouraged instructors to assist its work in educating the next generation of drivers on the importance of slowing down in residential areas.

The theme for this year's event - which takes place from November 22nd to 28th - is Kids Say Slow Down, which will involve children spreading the message that '20 mph is plenty'.

Julie Townsend, Campaigns Director at the organisation, said the project is "a great opportunity" for connecting local work to a national campaign and increasing awareness.

"We really value the involvement of driving instructors in the week; this year we are urging them to help to spread the message about the appalling carnage caused by speed," she added.

A study recently commissioned by the Department for Transport concluded serious driving offenders often refuse to take responsibility for their speeding penalties, according to the Daily Telegraph.
