DSV latest to join Green Freight Europe

Date: 31/8/2012
DSV Road Limited has become the latest organisation to join a voluntary initiative to enhance co-operation between transport companies and customers in a bid to reduce carbon emissions.Green Freight Europe looks to collect, compute and report on carbon emissions data with regard to road transport in Europe.
Other companies which have already signed up to the scheme include IKEA, DOW, Schneider Electric and Akzo Nobel, but also include transport supply companies.
René Falch Olesen, Chief Executive Officer, DSV Road Limited, said: "The transport sector has an impact on the global environment so it is our responsibility to lessen that impact whenever we can.
"But it is also good business since almost all our CO2 emissions are directly related to fuel consumption. If we can save fuel it will help both the environment and our bottom line so it is a central aspect of how we do business."
Goods transportation is an area where there are plenty of opportunities to improve the environmental impact.
DSV is trying to do this through a many pronged approach, which includes using trailers and ensuring that no space goes unused.
Planning and a well thought out transport network allows the firm to group small shipments together into bigger loads so that trucks never leave half empty.
Green Freight Europe welcomes the input of both large and small companies for the greater good of the environment.
Mr Olesen said: "We have a solid cooperation with our subcontractors and customers, who demand greener transport. With Green Freight Europe we can now share our knowledge and practical approach and be measured by it.
"It will then be up to the customers to compare us with the other transport companies and decide who does the better job."
Green Freight Europe now has 25 members and was officially launched in March this year with backing from the European Parliament and the European Commission.
